My guest Dr. Stephan Neff is an anaesthetist, author, and alcoholic in recovery. Joining us from New Zealand, he is one of my international co-authors in the compilation Break Down to Wake Up: Journey Beyond the Now.
Stephan's chapter "A Phoenix First Must Burn" recounts his addiction and recovery journey, from his frequent emotions of guilt, shame and pain to the sense of relief he felt while on his way to rehab. While he felt relieved to be heading to rehab, the experience was anything but easy.
Stephan turned his life around, and graciously shares his experience so that others may be inspired to do the same. He has learned many lessons as a doctor and a man, and reminds us that the truth is simple: The past does not equal the future.

Dr. Stephan Neff is a retired pain physician who has developed a specific insight into human psychology. As a man trying to drown his sorrows, he found out the hard way that the critters can swim. Over the last 7 years he has made every day a little bit better than yesterday.
Today Stephan is an expert in living a life so fantastic that alcohol has simply no role to play. He shares this passion through his podcast, YouTube channel, and social media (all titled A Different Life Story). In his book My Steps to Sobriety, he shares the lessons he has learned. Every alcoholic can turn his or her life around, one little decision at a time. This book shows how to do it.
