What better way to kick off Season II than to welcome Zaiya, my second-born, to the party!
"The Spirit's Paintbrush" touches on art and its deep, soul-level connection to the human spirit. Some might say that art is life, and as an expression of human emotion and experience, they would be right. No matter what the medium, art moves us in countless ways, even those we are not consciously aware of.
As a queer, nonbinary artist, Zaiya has a wide breadth of experience in the art world. While still a teenager (13), Zaiya shows us a depth of understanding that most of us adults would do well to pay attention to.
In particular, we limit ourselves. Why? Is it because adults aren't supposed to act "this way," whatever that is? Is it "childish" to allow ourselves to be creative? Is it "immature" to nourish our spirits?
I think not, and Zaiya agrees.

Zaiya Garza, 13, is a queer nonbinary artist, pictured here playing the guitar at a rest area in Nevada. Zaiya loves many artistic media, cooking, swimming, soccer, and writing (she is currently working on a novel.) Zaiya lives in Corvallis, Oregon.
